1969 年，美国数字设备公司（ DEC 公司）首先研制成功第一台可编程控制器 PDP － 14 。接着，美国 MODICON 公司也开发出可编程控制器 084 。
1971 年，日本从美国引进了这项新技术，很快研制成了日本第一台可编程控制器 DSC － 8 ；
1973 年，西欧国家也研制出他们的第一台可编程控制器；
我国从 1974 年也开始研制可编程控制器， 1977 年开始工业应用。
